The Pitch

Problem statement

We will deliver a junior multi-sports programme which will run for 16 weeks at 2 hours each week – Indoor in the winter and outdoors in the summer. The programme will use Cricket and Badminton as an engagement tool to enable participation for children and young people aged between 8 – 15 in improving physical and mental wellbeing. This programme will look to engage children and young people from disadvantaged backgrounds facing many barriers to participation hence our programme will look to tackle these barriers and provide opportunities to children who otherwise would not receive these opportunities.

Solution

The key outcomes we want to achieve from this project include: *80% new children and young people taking up regular physical activities outside of school *90% of the children to report increase in physical and mental wellbeing (we will measure this by ensuring we carry out surveys at the beginning, middle and at the end of the programme) *90% of the children and young people will report increased understanding around local issues and tools to equip themselves better in tackling these issues (workshop based outcomes) *70% of the children and young people to report positive outcomes outside of the sessions whether in school, home or community through participating in sports e.g. making friends

Why are we best placed to deliver?

We are a sports club based in Camden providing sporting opportunities for the local community for over 3 years. We have delivered various open days for families to engage the wider community which includes activities for children that they could do with their parents. Every year we deliver 4 family fun days (2 in winter, 2 in the summer) to engage with our local community and at each of these events we see over 80 families participate. We have a very strong community base in Camden, over the last 2 years we have started to provide provisions for children on a very small scale such as the ECB national programmes for children which runs for 8 weeks, in 2021 we achieved recognition from ECB.

Expected impact

To deliver this project we will target young people between the age of 8 – 15 from primary and secondary schools in the borough. Many of the children who attended our holiday camps and community programmes are from a deprived backgrounds and there is a demand for free sports activities on a regular basis. We will be working with all schools, local council and the local community to ensure we target the most deprived children for these sessions. The project coordinator will arrange for wider life skills delivery to ensure that children develop holistically and learn more than just sports in this project. They will also ensure to engage club volunteers and parents in this process. The workshop will be targeted and based on the needs of the local community such as nutritional workshops, local issues such knife crimes and drugs, community cohesion, understanding different cultures, etc will also be delivered by external tutors/providers where appropriate.
