The ultimate aim of the Aspire programme is to deliver a quality provision which provides young people with positive experiences and opportunities, both physically and emotionally, and affords them the same opportunities as their non-disabled peers during the school holiday periods.Children and young people engaging in sessions are encouraged to develop a wide range of personal and social outcomes including:- Improved self-esteem, self-worth and aspirations for the future- Improved emotional wellbeing and mental health- Greater resilience to deal with stressful situations- Improved feelings of safety within the community- Improved feelings of trust, particularly towards adults, leading to better engagement with professional support services and staff- Greater access to fun, free and positive activities locally
Like all projects at WYC, the programme has been developed in close consultation with local children, young people, and families. The Aspire programme is an extension of our Buddy Up befriending programme for disabled children. Through excellent relationships with families engaged on Buddy Up, we have been able to shape the Aspire programme to meet the needs of disabled children and young people and their families. The Aspire programme has developed organically following feedback over the last 5 years from parents and carers concerned about the lack of truly inclusive social opportunities for their young people outside of the school calendar. More broadly, WYC and the council have worked very closely with WARRPAC, the leading Warrington parent and carer Forum for families of disabled children, who have described the project as “an absolutely invaluable service”.
