It is well documented that poverty, crime and insufficient access to education lead to worse outcomes for young people. Of course, there are exceptions, and at XLP’s heart is a desire to create such exceptions in the lives of those we work with. The disadvantages they face makes them more likely to leave mainstream education without the skills and discipline necessary to achieve and sustain employment. All these challenges have been exacerbated by the pandemic and the cost of living crisis. Youth Unemployment in London has soared by 55% since the start of the pandemic with more than 21% of young people jobless and seeking work. This figure is five times the national jobless rate for all ages
Young people will be engaged in an intensive 8-week course delivered at our Charity Head Offices on London Wall, consisting of workshops, 1-2-1 sessions, work experience, volunteering, and job application and interview support. We are also keen to develop more effectively an employability mentoring scheme with the support of companies based within the Culture Mile BID. The programme has the following key outcomes for the participants involved. 1.Taking part in work experience in the Culture Mile BID. 2. Drive Social impact within the Local community. 3.Access further education, training and employment 4. Gain apprenticeships, internships and trainee partnerships
XLP now operates in nine inner-city boroughs around London, and the City of London, working with 4,000 young people each year through education, mentoring, employability, community youth work, sports and the arts. We believe in amplifying young voices. We have a number of staff who were young people on our projects, we have a group of young people who help inform our decisions, and we run an apprentice programme to help give employment opportunities for young people. XLP recently won the 'Best Youth Voice' award from The London Community Foundation and we were recently nominated for the London Impact Award for our role in raising the voice of young people.

On last Ready To Work programme we worked with a group of young people presented with a diverse range of mental health needs, social anxieties and complex family backgrounds. Over the 6 weeks, we were able to expand perspectives, give new experiences and enable the attendees to feel more confident in their ability and work readiness. Examples of this have been a significant increase in securing job interviews after our CV workshops, more call backs and follow up after the completion of interviews (the young people accredit this to the skills and advice given on the program),finding and securing apprenticeships, being more socially active. During these 6 weeks, all attendees have pushed through their own personal comfort zones and have become more aware of the need for clear communication with support networks and possible employees.
