The Pitch

Problem statement

ATF have a successful track record of improving young peoples lives through sporting activities in South Essex. We have well trained DBS checked, safeguarding aware/trained staff that operate in dozens of areas. In the last few years the area of Westcliff in Southend has struggled against an increase in Anti Social Behaviour, youth violence and gang/county lines culture. By engaging young people in a positive way and giving them an outlet and committing to a minimum of 1 weekly sporting engagement ATF can address these issues from directly within the community. This will reduce these ASB patterns and build positive relationships.

Solution

Recently the Essex Youth Service introduced us to a local former England International Basketball player who has been coaching since his retirement from playing the sport competitively. ATF have introduced this coach into our sporting sessions within our clubs and have been extremely impressed with how young people respond to his skills, personality and attitude. We would look to hold a minimum of 1 x weekly Basketball session in Chalkwell Park which currently has 3 x Basketball courts. These sessions would be free of charge to the user and the funds would be spent as follows: Coach costs - £25 per hour, x 2 hours/coaches, x 52 wks = £2600. Equipment/Expenses - £400 Total cost £3000

Why are we best placed to deliver?

ATF will promote these sessions both through social media (Facebook and Twitter) and through giving out leaflets to potential participants, schools and shops and also raising an advertising flag at every session. ATF will provide 2 x DBS approved Coaches to every session plus all necessary equipment free of charge to anyone who wishes to participate. This will also be run with a view to provide an introduction to local Basketball clubs for any evident talented players. ATF have successfully introduced dozens of these type ventures but not previously for Basketball. Having assessed the target area there is a lot of potential for uptake and a distinct need for positive activity groups.

Expected impact

2 x coaches would receive payment and guidance for sessions that they have already expressed a desire to undertake as a way to actively improve local lives. This was expressed with the lack of knowledge as to how to go about such a project. The coaches have Basketball backgrounds and are from under represented communities. They have a wealth of experience as well as a will to use the sport as a vehicle for change and to promote a healthier lifestyle. Allied to the fact that regular social sporting engagement is statistically proven to improve a persons self esteem and overall health it shows evidence of reduction in ASB and gang grooming. If young people have regular positive activities to look forward to and engage them they are far less likely to become involved in negative alternatives that generally lead to criminality.
