The Pitch

Problem statement

Horton Golf Club is organised and funded entirely by its members, who currently number around 180 local golfers of all ages. We have no staff which means that all the work needed to maintain the course is completed by the members. The course was developed in the 1990's on three fields rented from a local farmer and is largely based on clay which causes some problems with drainage in the winter and with irrigation in the summer. To help with these problems the members constructed five ponds which are designed to fill in the winter and to provide irrigation for the greens in the summer. The problem this year has been the incredibly wet winter which has continued all through the spring.

Solution

We use six petrol driven pumps to accomplish the above work, five for the ponds and one for the clubhouse cesspit which was frequently inundated with water in the wet spells. The pumps we currently own have been overworked in the winter and we are now facing the need to purchase new ones otherwise we will not be able to irrigate the greens this summer nor drain the wet areas next winter. The club pays for everything via low membership fees. This year we have been able to fund electricity into the clubhouse but unfortunately this means we have no funds left to purchase machinery such as the water pumps. The smaller pumps costs £470 inc Vat, of which need 5, and the larger pump is £500.

Why are we best placed to deliver?

We have a small team of members who provide all the skills needed to maintain our golf course, and so once we have the new pumps we can ensure that our membership can continue to enjoy a course that is maintained in good condition. Our membership covers all ages but is mostly retired people from the local community. We are always looking out for new members with our unique approach of low membership fees (currently only £195 for a year) and a requirement to contribute to grounds maintenance and clubhouse cleanliness, so we feel that this approach is suitable for people of all backgrounds, age and income.

Expected impact

Much better quality of golf course which will make it easier to retain existing members and attract new ones. We currently have to close the course in the wettest periods as it's impossible to play, and for the members to maintain the course through grass cutting.

Track record

All our machinery, clubhouse and facilities have been funded by members except for the occasional grant from generous providers.
