The organisation was founded to support local men because men are less likely to access local peer-to-peer support than their female counterparts but at the same time are much more likely to suffer from problems associated with mental health. In particular: ● 43% of men admit to feeling worried or low ● 10% of men feel suicidal when feeling worried or low ● Men report significantly lower life satisfaction than women in the Government’s national well-being survey - with those aged 45 to 59 reporting the lowest levels of life satisfaction ● The male suicide rate for was 15.3 per 100,000 compared to the female rate of 4.9 per 100,00 Locally Wigan Borough has higher rates of male suicide
• It is our hope to improve men’s access to local support services, improve their quality of life and tackle issues regarding toxic masculinity and how this influences our user’s lives. • Build a support hub that helps break down the barrier of men’s social stigma and create a social space for men of all ages regardless of their needs. • To provide men and their families with a physical space that creates a safe, barrier free community where they can connect with each other and build support structures. Our current priority is to provide additional drop in centres and are seeking assistance with room hire and sessional worker costs.
There are no other organisations offering individual or small group support as others work in larger groups and institutions such as Atherleigh Park hospital cannot provide the social support other than through our attendance. As a result we have grown rapidly and are in demand. Manleigh collects information on its performance but whilst we can record progress by clients, each person is an individual with different needs and rates and types of progress. Therefore there is little systematic information on rates of progression. However we have the following: Number of clients 116 Number of champions (clients who have progressed to be able to engage without direct support) 43

Case Study – Mr S Mr S lives in supported accommodation as he is a recovering drug and alcohol addict. He joined Man Leigh after doing a local life skills course. At the end of the course, he was signposted to Man Leigh after he expressed an interest in gaining further life skills. We received his referral via email and invited him to our Saturday group at our local Tesco. Mr S enjoys the cycling group, recycling project and peer-to-peer support. Today, he is our Greeter at our Saturday group and is a friendly face for all our attendees. He will also be volunteering at our project in collaboration with the Job Centre as a peer supporter.
