The Pitch

Problem statement

There is a lack of mixed team sport available to the community. Sports teams tend to focus on only the best players and operate in a competitive league structure. Touch rugby is a totally mixed sport, with minimal contact, which can be played and enjoyed after only a brief introduction.

Solution

The aim of the is to get at least 40 people from the community playing and enjoying Touch Rugby all year round, plus contact rugby players who are retiring from contact rugby. There will be regular training leading up to social mixed tournaments, with other local teams also to be invited to spread the reach of the game. We will employ a Touch qualified coach to deliver 40 x 1.5 hour training sessions (60 hours x £30 = £1,800), plus a monthly tournament for 10 months of year (£50 per tournament for referees, plus £30 for first aid cover, and £120 for coaching and organisation = total £200 per event, £2,000). Finally, £200 would be spent on rugby balls - would purchase 10 balls

Why are we best placed to deliver?

Wymondham Touch is part of Wymondham Rugby Club and its excellent facilities (see image below). The Touch section has trained coaches who are currently representing England at age group level, and so are operating at a very high level. The coaches have delivered an excellent starter to competing player programme for Iceni - a diverse LBGQT+ group over the last 9 months. This has taken players, some of whom have had very unfortunate experiences of team sport in their adolescent years at school, and through appropriate coaching, has allowed them to (re)discover a love of team sport. So coaches have shown that they can work with both beginners and more experienced and inspire and enthuse both.

Expected impact

40 people from the community will be introduced as new players to the sport. Additionally, 10 players who are either retiring from contact rugby who have already retired will also continue to enjoy team sport - the time when you leave contact rugby can be very challenging for mental health, as the player's world often revolves around the routine and camaraderie of rugby
