The Pitch

Problem statement

There is a need for the continued provision of football coaching in Preston for adult disability and adult refugee/asylum seeker groups. The STFSC is the only organisation in the Preston area that provides this. The groups/attendees use the sessions to make friends, form self help groups, get exercise, meet like minded people and as their social event of the week. We have 50 disabled adults registered and a weekly attendance of 36 and we have 45 refugee/asylum seekers registered with a weekly attendance of 25. All the playing kit is provided for the refugee/asylum seeker attendees.

Solution

The goal of the project is to provide football coaching in a safe, professional and secure environment. All coaches are volunteers with no paid posts, the £3000 if we are successful, will help us cover the cost of venue hire, equipment and kit. The cost of the venue to the STFSC is £125 per week, so the £3000 would cover the cost of 24 sessions.

Why are we best placed to deliver?

The STFSC is a well known, charter standard registered charity. The STFSC has received several awards for inclusiveness, our coaches are volunteers but all are qualified and have the required checks, we work in partnership with Lancashire Police, Lancashire CC, Preston CC, British Red Cross, Lancashire Football Association and we are the only providers of this opportunity in the Preston area.

Expected impact

If we are successful in this bid, we will be able to continue with our provision of coaching to these marginalised groups. The impact on the attendees mental health, wellbeing, physical fitness and social interaction is not measurable but speaking to the attendees it is invaluable. Numbers vary but continue to increase in the main via word of mouth of the attendees. The sessions are now signposted by our partners to adults they feel would benefit. The volunteers are dedicated and very flexible ensuring that sessions meet the needs of the attendees, that any issues are dealt with and the attendees have a first class experience.

Track record

The STFSC has since our inception been recognised several times including Community club of the year, Preston sports awards 2016 England nominated UEFA club of the year 2018 The FA and McDonalds grassroots football awards 2018 Charter Standard club of the year Preston sports awards club of the year 2019 North West Football, promoting inclusion award 2020 Lancashire FA inclusion award 2020 In addition volunteer coaches have been awarded numerous individual awards for their work within the STFSC
