The Pitch

Problem statement

With the rising costs in electricity, gas, fuel and food, people's budgets are being squeezed like never before. There is a real crisis where so many of us are genuinely having to choose between heating or eating. This is the plain reality for so many people in our communities and it's no longer people without jobs, in work poverty is is effecting many, many families.

Solution

Our goal is to make sure no one in Carnoustie ever goes hungry again. We will use the funding from Action Funder to open an S-Mart Mini Mart in Carnoustie which will ensure everyone has access to food.

Why are we best placed to deliver?

We have created a solutuon which gives dignity to those who are experiencing food insecurity. One where there is no stigma, no means testing, no having to justify why you need a helping hand, we have created S-Mart, a supermarket with a difference. A social Supermarket using surplus goods where spending £5 gives you £10 worth of food and can save hundreds of pounds a year, savings which can go towards other essential household bills. Our model has been tried and tested in Forfar and since opening in 2020 has saved the people of Forfar almost 3 million pounds on their food bills.

Expected impact

The impact of having an S-Mart in Carnoustie will mean everyone will have access to food and no one will need to be hungry. This will not only effect those in extreme poverty, those suffering food insecurity and people who are experiencing in-work poverty but will also benefit the local economy, reduce C02 emissions going into the atmosphere but will bring the community together through a common goal of supporting our community to make sure food is not wasted and that no one goes hungry.

Track record

In our Forfar Hub we have managed to save 300 tonnes of food from going to waste by putting 760,000 meals on the tables of people in the community by giving them access to hugely discounted and free food saving individual households £1500 over the three years we have been open. We have almost 2000 members of S-Mart which equates to a saving of 3 millions pounds collectively saved since opening.
