The Pitch

Problem statement

Addiction is an avid contributor to several major societal problems, such as homelessness, crime, unemployment, and poor public health, contributing to burdens on communities and local government as a result. Between 2020 and 2021, a report published by GOV.UK stated that over 130,000 people in the UK began treatment for addiction issues. In addition, 275,896 adults were engaged with drug and alcohol services between April 2020 and March 2021, an increase from previous years. Nearly two-thirds (63%) of adults starting treatment said they had mental health treatment needs. Just under half, 47%, of those entering treatment programs were able to complete treatment and remain substance free.

Solution

Our Well-Being and Development Project aims to enable our residents to engage in group activities that enhance their recovery prospects and bring them together as a community. We are currently focusing on exercise, community engagement, and healthy eating. We want to provide the residents with bicycles to encourage mental and physical fitness. Cycling is proven to enhance the immune system and promote better sleep. As well as the immense health benefits, our residents will be able to take volunteer positions within the local community allowing them to give something back.. Additionally, we will be reducing our carbon footprint through zero-emission transport

Why are we best placed to deliver?

The NLP is run by qualified and experienced staff who provide support and housing management. We help residents to focus on their recovery and improve their health whilst learning to live within a community. As a non-profit charity, we seek to collaborate with other charities to develop our residents where we can. Assisting residents to progress both physically and mentally also has a positive effect on the local and wider community. Each individual that we assist in recovery has the potential for better health and the prospect of employment. This reduces the costs and pressures on local services, crime rates are reduced, and the safety & security of the local area are improved.

Expected impact

The impact is difficult to measure as it will benefit our residents physically, mentally, emotionally and practically. They will be able to attend meetings to maintain their recovery and attend further education and employability groups. There are further benefits to their families who see them recover, the local community who see a reduction in crime, and an increase in voluntary participation with local charity groups.
