The Pitch

Problem statement

In 2023 Saltash Community Library Hub is planning to have two Spring and Summer environment months in April and June. Our proposal is to have a series of events and activities to promote the care for our environment and wildlife. This will range from giving out packets of bee/butterfly friendly seeds for urban gardens to having Plymouth junk band ‘Weapons of Sound’ workshops promoting re-cycling to children and families. We will also have specialist presentations from organisations such as RSPB, Cornwall Wildlife Trust, Schumacher college regen farming, Tamar Valley Foods and others to educate the future of local land management, food production and ‘human footprint’ responsibilities.

Solution

We liaise with local schools as well as our local community to offer a wide selection of educational events and activities specifically though these seasons. We have our own in-house cardboard re-cycle tree where we centre education on our local indigenous tree species (Partnered with Tree Saltash) as well as learning about our friends the ‘bug’ population. Our aim is to reach out to all ages as well as promote the local landscapes and wildlife on our doorstep as well as educate with a ‘soft’ touch. It is also an education to promote potential areas of employment in land management, food production and many areas of wildlife protection etc.

Why are we best placed to deliver?

We are a community hub in the middle of Saltash used by all ages. Everything we do, from the library service to events and activities is free to the community (inc schools). We have literary festivals, warm spaces/film Fridays and are currently providing well being events and activities from Jan to February in conjunction with many partners. We will have a Science week in March to support British Science Week and encourage the sciences to children of all ages.

Expected impact

This is about legacy and continuing the messages delivered by ourselves and our partners. We a a community library support the environment throughout the year. So much so we have joined the Libraries 'Green Agenda'.

Track record

2022 Environment months were hugely impactful (inc Autumn month). Schools visited from Saltash and messages were taken home to parents ranging from re-cycling to local environment. These events and activities are designed to educate with a 'soft' touch as we are so used to seeing the bad news stories on television. Local community groups visit throughout the month as well for presentations etc.
