Expected impact

There no other martial arts running specialised classes for people with disabilities in Bromley. We will fill this gap. Our project will insure that people with SEN have a safe and secure environment in which to learn Taekwondo. There will be specifically designed session plans and specialised equipment to ensure that people with disabilities people have the same access and opportunity to succeed in Taekwondo as anyone else. In general people with disabilities find it harder to access sports by providing a face and welcoming environment for people with disabilities we will increase confidence, fitness and well-being. We will have links with other holiday camps and disability groups in London and improve the disability community in the area.

Track record

Aquila have been teaching classes in Lewisham and Bromley for over 10 years. We currently run an SEN class exclusively for people with disabilities in Lewisham. We initially received funding for 10 weeks / classes from a charity (Access Sport) in order to get the project up and running. The club slowly grew from 5 - 13 members. Due to the members now paying a small fee for each class, the SEN class is fully sustainable and covers it costs. The dedicated SEN class in Lewisham has now been running for 7 months. We hope to do exactly the same in the neighbouring borough of Bromley. The parents of the SEN children in Lewisham say that there are "few sports clubs" and there "no martial arts clubs in the area" Being disabled, many of the parents are worried for their children's safety. We have received feedback on a number of occasions that our martial-art classes have inspired a lot of confidence in the children and made the parents less worried about their children.
