The Pitch

Problem statement

Our organisation operates in an area of severe deprivation and a small number of sporting opportunities. Our sport can be an expensive one to play but we are committed as an organisation to ensuring no child or young person is prevented (a) with the cost of equipment or (b) the cost of taking part due to the costs we face for facility hire that are penalised due to a lack of use by statutory services. By ensuring we can prevent no child or young person from taking part in physical activity due to financial means we are hoping we are playing our small part in bridging the gap in an already deprived area.

Solution

The goal of the project and the purpose of funding is to allow us to purchase additional equipment to ensure no child is prevented from taking part due to a lack of it. For context, a helmet in our sport (which is mandatory) costs approx. £70 and a hurl (stick) is approx. £30. In addition, funding would be used to offset any subsidy we need to apply to individuals/families (which is kept in private) in terms of ensuring finance doesn't prevent them from taking part in physical activity.

Why are we best placed to deliver?

Our organisation is one of the few organisations in the area of Craigend and are acutely aware of the issues facing the local community due to our involvement with them. Our management committee contains local people as well as parents/guardians so only attempts of us to grow the club is with a true understanding of what might work for local people. We also have a proven record over the last few years of attempting to support our community. For example, we run an annual summer camp that seeks to provide physical activity free of charge during the summer holidays as well as a hot meal each day.

Expected impact

It will ensure we have enough equipment to grow should people wish to take part as we publicise our organisation more in the local community. It will also mean we have funding to ensure finance becomes no barrier to participation.

Track record

We work strongly with local partners including active schools, for example in 2022 we introduced the sport to approx. 1500 children to raise awareness of the sport and opportunity our club offers
