We are transforming a neglected concrete space into a haven for humans and honeybees in the heart of the city. We are tackling the isolation that can come from living in neighbouring high rises by creating opportunities for visitors to convene with others and with nature. They can learn all about pollinators, local flora and fauna, and become more crucially connected with the world around them. We believe that in so doing, Bee Corner affords local people the chance to improve their mental health and well being, and feel part of the natural world around them - so often unseen against the urban backdrop.
As well as the apiary, currently home to 6 honey bee colonies, we also have a shepherd hut, equipment shed, and honey house (for the extraction and bottling of honey) onsite. We would like to improve the site for the safety and comfort of visitors and improve our facilities in order to engage with people and help them learn all about bees and beekeeping. We would like to build an outhouse and also improve the honey house (it's currently just a shell), with insulation, interior cladding, sinks, and and water supply. We also need to create access to power - ideally an off grid solution with solar panels and battery banks to power lights, audio visual equipment (for example the Bee Cam).
We are a charity, with a core team of committed volunteers. We are movers and shakers and revel getting things done. In just 3 months we have transformed a neglected, urban space into a green sanctuary, and we feel we can continue to achieve great things. We are resourceful, procuring equipment, plants and planters via donations and recycled materials. We are also passionate about the environment and helping people. We are perfectly placed in the heart of Salford to engage with a wide variety of organisations, schools, and community groups.

Through hosting events and training experiences, people will have the chance to learn about honeybees and the needs of pollinators that will help to connect them with the natural world and with other people. We expect improvement in local people's/ attendee's mental health and well being, and plan to offer mentoring and longer term relationship building with volunteer and internship opportunities. We plan to monitor attendee numbers and capture feedback via visitor books and interviews. Our first event (Bees to Bed) was attended by over 50 people (including local residents and children)- despite poor weather- and we believe we can build on these numbers by engaging with other community and school groups from the Salford area as we become further established.
We have, as individuals, previously worked with other charities and volunteered in various organisations in the local community. These include Volition (Manchester and Salford Cathedrals), Salford Lads Club, Weaste Allotments, and Manchester and District Beekeepers' Association. Bee Corner is a new project, established only in June 2021. Our first event, attended by 50 people garnered excellent feedback, "It was mega! My daughter loved it, was chatting about bees all evening" - "We have been fascinated learning all about the bees...we loved tasting the different types of honeys. Thanks for a brilliant experience!" - "An AMAZE event!" We used a GoPro camera connected to a monitor just outside (and a safe distance away from) the apiary, so that everyone could see the bees close up. We also suited up 3 visitors in full PPE, and gave them a hands on experience in the hives - they handled frames and equipment and had a first hand look at the mysteries of the hive.
