The Pitch

Problem statement

Capoeira Communities have had a difficult return to public classes since the end of the pandemic and currently with the cost of living crisis. As a rebuilding organisation we are maintaining classes with only our passion, meaning we are unable to pay instructors and often paying hall rent from our own pockets. A lack of funds means we are unable to afford things like administrative support, new equipment or promotional material. Also we recognise many people are currently struggling and we want to offer a warm place to learn, maintain physical and mental wellbeing and to socialise. So we would like to offer free classes for people who are from lower income or refugee families.

Solution

Our goal is to re-build our community while offering people who are struggling an opportunity to attend classes. Funding will be spent on: The maintenance and growth of classes, outreach efforts, promotional material and public demonstrations. Funding would breath new life into our organisation and ensure that we can continue and grow through winter months. We would be able to ensure payment for our instructors, administrators, hall rental, new equipment and staff training. With the assurance of costs being covered this would alleviate pressure on the class so we could offer them for free to those people in need of support. With the aim of creating a vibrant, supportive community.

Why are we best placed to deliver?

'Capoeira Communities' is a 'Princes Trust' award wining not-for-profit that teaches the unique Afro-Brazilian martial art of Capoeira - A mixture of kicks, dodges, gymnastics and dance. We were founded in 2006 in Norwich and since then have taught children, adults, youth offenders, refugees, those with special educational needs, prisoners and all varied and beautiful walks of life. Our aim is to provide support and offer opportunities to, but not exclusively for, disadvantaged and marginalised groups of people enabling them to build and strengthen a sense of community, inclusion and self esteem as well as physical and mental wellbeing. We teach what we love with joy, passion and warmth.

Expected impact

With this project going ahead we expect to reach people who may not otherwise have had the opportunity to take part in classes. We want our project to allow people experiencing difficulty through the cost of living crisis or resettlement to develop their confidence, socialise, stay fit and healthy and take care of their mental wellbeing. We hope to strengthen and create a reliable community for those in need. Our lessons nurture and develop skills such as: balance, motor control, self expression, cooperation, confidence, rhythm, creativity, stamina, strength and understanding of how to look after the body. Through the project participants will tangibly feel the change in their bodies and concurrently minds. The project will also reinvigorate our public classes, allowing them to happen without an overhanging financial worry. Thus meaning we can focus on promotion, development and growth as an organisation. Allowing us to traverse out of what has been a difficult few years for all.

Track record

In 2018 we held integration sessions for refugees and asylum seekers. Offering free classes to displaced people and a chance to meet others and socialise. In partnership with Greenhouse Trust and New Routes we supported over 60 people attending various classes over 6 weeks. Capoeira Communities also received funding in 2019 for a Children and Parent group. Comments from parents: "Really noticed a big difference with our kids within weeks of participating in the group. The children enjoy the classes and have continued their new found skills outside of the group. Thanks!" Memet, Father of Amelia and Konner. "William has learnt so much with nearly a year of lessons; he can cartwheel, hold a handstand, do 4 Capoeira kicks and 3 dodges. We have loved it" Amelia, Mother of William.
