The Pitch

Problem statement

We aim to continue to run our men and women's walking football groups whilst growing our offerings to support men and women's recreational 7s. With the current cost of living crisis, we understand it's difficult to budget in activities as other essentials take priority. This is also felt by the Trust as the cost of floodlights for the pitch has increased and we don't want these costs to be passed on to the participants. According to The Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation 2017, the Forfar Central and Forfar West zones are within the top 10 most income deprived areas. In both communities over 22% of the population are classed as being income deprived; highlighting the importance of this.

Solution

The goal is to provide an adult activity at varying recreational levels for male and female participants. This funding will be used to create a men and women's recreational 5-aside/7-aside weekly session, it will allow us to provide free taster sessions and keep any session cost low thereafter. The funding will also be used to support our weekly men and women's walking football to reduce the costs of the sessions. The low cost/free activity will allow our sessions to be accessible to more adults, as we understand that more people will be budgeting and having to prioritise necessities. Participation will help reduce isolation, build friendships and provide multiple health benefits.

Why are we best placed to deliver?

We feel we are best placed to deliver this program as Forfar Community Trust is made up of three club partners. Our links to Forfar Farmington and Forfar Athletic Community Club gives us a wide audience with a combined membership of over 380. This gives us access to the families directly, as well as the support of our third partner Forfar Athletic, the local professional football team. We have a track record of supporting adults in activity through our walking football which has been running for the past 6 months for both men and women. We also deliver another program supporting adults gain a healthier lifestyle, through this we have links to local GP surgeries to help with social prescribing

Expected impact

We expect the funding to help make football activity in Forfar available for all ages and genders, as well as encouraging adults who haven't played the sport in a number of years to get back to being active. This activity will help with fitness levels which in turn will have health benefits due to possible weight loss and mental stimulation. It will also give isolated adults the opportunity to have something to look forward to each week and bring together people from different walks of life. This will contribute towards participants choosing healthier habits/ways to spend their time. Introduction and finishing questionnaires will allow us to gather data around age, activity level and general feelings of the individuals. This amongst other crucial information will allow us to determine the needs when partakers first join as well as how the sessions have impacted on those taking part by the end of the funded period. The difference in these answers will show a clear picture of the results
