The Pitch

Problem statement

WHO guidelines recommend 150-300 mins moderate activity/week but only 60% of British people achieve this The City wants more people to walk, to improve physical and mental health and wellbeing; reduce transport emissions; boost spending in local shops (see study of the Pedestrian Pound); and fill neighbourhoods with life The Barbican is a superb cultural venue but is difficult for pedestrians to access. Similarly, routes link the Eastern City to its surrounds but these are not easy to find, especially to the north The Barbican ‘Directions’ page mentions walking, but lacks details of routes. Other orgs. are similar A walking map is needed for all the cultural institutions in the area ,

Solution

Footways will create a digital map showing walking routes from Elizabeth and mainline stations, particularly to the Barbican and less accessible parts of the Eastern City, with interesting features to explore on the way The map can be embedded on the “Getting here” pages of the Council, BID and local institutions' websites The community will be invited to contribute features The features will be shown as layers such as food & drink, art, places needing improvement The maps will promote the area, draw people there on foot, engage local communities and share ideas about infrastructure improvements with the City Funds are for developing the map, engagement, photos, writing features
