The Pitch

Problem statement

Research from Sport England suggests that team sports are a vital tool to prevent social isolation and loneliness. Team sport is also essential to support mental health within a community. We require a scoreboard to be able to continue to support 5 adult men's teams, 3 women's teams and two T20 age group teams (over 18s). It is a league requirement that we have a scoreboard of this kind. By being able to continue with our existing set up we can continue our work as a community space, putting the needs of our members and the community first. Without this scoreboard, we would be forced to reduce our output.

Solution

The total project funds will be spent towards a new LED scoreboard. This will be match funded by our current fundraising efforts. Our project will reach over 200 adults directly, plus an estimated 2000 indirectly. This will allow us to continue with our delivery of large amounts of cricket and in turn, hosting community events. It is imperative that we have this equipment so we can continue to grow our activity and community reach to new audiences. It also allows our members security, in that there club will be available to them when they need it. Also by having a scoreboard, we are eligible for hosting disability cricket at our facility, something we are keen to pursue.

Why are we best placed to deliver?

Caythorpe CC has a proven track record of being able to deliver high quality projects and services over many years. We are considered a staple social hub for the surrounding community and further afield. We have achieved ECB ClubMark accreditation, every year since its' inception and have an inclusivity and diversity agenda. Where practical we host community days, hire out our facilities to local groups free of charge, fundraise for external charities and host our own bursary system for those less fortunate, allowing them to play cricket at a reduced or free rate. We are supported by a range of passionate, dedicated volunteers who are keen to grow the club with a community focus.

Expected impact

We will reach 200 adults directly with at least an estimated 2000 indirectly. This project has two overarching aims: 1)To connect the community by the continued delivery of sport 2)To provide ongoing sport for a variety of people to support their physical and mental well-being. The provision of a scoreboard will allow us to host several community events; inviting the public to watch cricket and get involved. We will plan to host several “taster sessions” to advertise for new players as well as a community day, filled with local stalls and entertainment whilst showcasing the cricket at our club. The impact of aim 2 is paramount. In line with our club objectives we strive to bring cricket to all, and this investment would allow us to keep running our teams allowing several hundred members to partake in regular sport, essential to their physical and mental health. We would also be able to host disability cricket at our ground which is unachievable without this scoreboard.

Track record

We recently completed a project to start up a women's softball team. This was hugely successful and we have achieved an additional 30 female members who would've otherwise been inactive or socially isolated. We have received very positive references from our local Councillor with regards to our project to improve and modernise disabled access to our facilities. We have been in operation for over a hundred years, particularly in more recent times we have gone from strength to strength by growing our adult section and turn out over 7 teams; where we are one of only a handful of clubs in Nottinghamshire to do so. The addition of a women's team has been successful, which has now grown into three! Moreover, we provide cricket for beginners and development players to provide sport for all, to help with mental health. We are ECB ClubMark accredited and strive to include all, and have set up partnerships with loocal organisations and schools to put ourselves at the heart of the community.
