The Pitch

Problem statement

Shoalstone Pool is a seawater filled pool used by the Brixham community for generations since 1926. The pool is filled by the tide and does not have a filtration system. During the summer months, algae builds up in the trapped seawater and discolours the water for swimmers. We cannot treat the water with chemicals as it is discharged directly into the sea. This would have a detrimental effect on wildlife. The pool used to have a filtration system which cleaned and recirculated the water. It was removed in 2014 by the local council to save money. We want to reinstate this system but first need to understand the infrastructure in place that can be reused.

Solution

We want to carry a full survey of the pipework that is in place under the pool for the circulation of water. Some of this has been removed but a lot of it is still in-situ and could be reused. This would save huge amounts of money and also disruption to the existing infrastructure.

Why are we best placed to deliver?

We maintain and run the pool ourselves through a team of committed volunteers. We have run a number of large infrastructural repair projects all of which have been delivered to time and budget. We have identified local suppliers who can carry out the specialist survey work required.

Focus Areas

Delivery plan

Budget breakdown

Survey and report£700
Make good any uncovered infrastructure (render/concrete)£150

Beneficiaries

1,500 people

Expected impact

The filtration system will enhance the pool water significantly making the pool a more attractive place to swim and also the water safer for lifeguarding. We measure visitor numbers daily and will be able to monitor the change pre/post filtration

Track record

In the past three years we have run two significant repair projects at the pool both of which have been complex marine civil engineering problems. We have also installed broadband infrastructure, EPOS systems and monitored CCTV. All of these projects have stuck to timescale and budget.
