The Pitch

Problem statement

There are over 3500 people in Sunderland living with Dementia and our overall goal is to reach and support as many people as possible. We are now the only day care centre for people with dementia which offers personal care in Sunderland. We currently have 38 members and at full attendance we run 75 sessions per week. With ever growing demand, we have now outgrown our current day care centre. The larger day care centre will allow us to increase the number of members we can accommodate and how quickly they can secure a place. The new day centre will initially increase to 20 members per day (100 sessions per week). The new centre also allows us to increase this number over time.

Solution

The goal of this project is to create an improved safe, supporting and stimulating environment for all members. We are designing and changing the layout of the new centre to support our members needs. The funding will be spent on restructuring the centre. The centre previously was a doctors surgery, therefore, we are knocking the walls down to create larger spaces. The new centre will include; a sensory/quiet room, craft room, games room, meeting room, staff room and charity shop. The impact of this project will be supporting more people living with dementia, their families, friends and carers.

Why are we best placed to deliver?

North East Dementia Care is the best place to deliver this project as this is an extension of our current work. In 3 years of founding the charity, and being closed for 10 months during COVID, we have had a growing demand and our members have steadily increased. This shows we are a sustainable charity who are providing important services many families need. Our carers are fully trained with many years of experience. All trustees have cared for a loved one who had Dementia and have accessed various services. We understand the needs of the people we provide our services to and therefore can create a suitable environment for all of our members.

Expected impact

We will be able to ensure we create a welcoming, safe and stimulated day care centre for our current and new members. Funding will facilitate a full restructure of a new day care centre, allowing us to provide our services to more people in Sunderland and allow us to offer free carers groups to the community. The new centre will have a dedicated room for our carers groups on a Monday and a Wednesday. We currently run 1 carers group every other week. We are looking to expand this service to include those who don't use our service, as we would have the space to do so. This would be a free group for members and their families to attend for support and activities. We would look to expand this service weekly. Overall, new centre will allow us to reach and support more people and families. We currently run 75 sessions per week and initially we will look to increase this to 100 sessions per week in the new centre. This number will increase over time as we now have the space to grow.
