The Pitch

Problem statement

The period of transition from primary to secondary school at the age of 11-12 is a crucial stage in the development of children and the Football for Life project aims to provide the intervention and support required by most children during this period. Providing positive interventions at this crucial age will address and work with many of the issues that prevent young people from progressing constructively through the transitional period and successfully through secondary school. Working in partnership with the primary schools’ Extended Schools Coordinator we will aim to identify and target the schools, which seem to be experiencing the most difficulties with children of this age.

Solution

weekly football session providing children with an hour’s topical workshop (citizenship, aspirations, healthy living, employment etc.) followed by a 1.5 hours of Football coaching and Round Robin matches on the local community pitch. We have a regular attendance of 20 -25 children at these sessions. This project aims to support young people through this period of development, from age 7 to 11, to provide a solid grounding of support and to help them become reliable and responsive. We aim to improve educational attainment and lifelong learning for these young people, through football activities.

Why are we best placed to deliver?

CYP emerged 20 years ago as a grass roots local effort to tackle problems faced and expressed by young people. Its most distinctive feature is that it is very much a network of children and young people who started out to, and continues to set their own agenda in terms of aims and activities. Naturally sport (football in particular) and the arts have dominated the activities. CYP identified a community that is divided by race, wealth and class. The area contains 6 pockets of poverty (Super Output Areas) these areas of poverty are amongst the 20% most deprived areas nationally and are sandwiched between the new Kings Cross Central Development and the leafy roads of Barnsbury.

Track record

Mrs Smith is the mother of 8 children 3 of which attend the Tuesday Football session and linked tournaments. The boys have engaged excellently with the session and we have seen an amazing growth and development in both their Football and social skills. They have represented CYP in a number of tournaments in their relative age groups. Mrs Smith has commented on how the CYP Football programme has given her sons a positive outlet helping them to manage their aggression, improve their confidence, discipline and organisational skills. The boys have participated in many new activities with CYP and have developed very positive relationships with the Youth Work team. During this period the growth and development in each of the brothers has been evident as described in the list below.
