The Pitch

Problem statement

Improving the physical health and mental well-being of children, young people and adults within our community. The community village of Horden has experienced significant social and economic problems, with the village now being in the top 3% of the most deprived areas in England and Wales. In Horden, 29.5% of children aged under 16 years reside in relative child poverty in families compared with 18.4% nationally In Horden, 52% of children aged under 16 years live in areas in the top 10% most deprived areas nationally Childhood obesity is on the increase with 29.8% of 11 year olds in Horden obese in comparison with 20.0% nationally. 44.6% of 11 year olds in Horden are overweight or obese

Solution

To provide a safe and secure environment for children to play football. It will improve the fitness, health and well-being children within our community through participation and engagement in physical exercise, football training and coaching during these very challenging and difficult COVID times. This will improve mental health and general well-being of all those actively engaged and participating in this project. It will improve some of their social skills in terms of understanding the principles of team work, effective communication, physical and mental problem solving techniques, and the opportunity to become active members and participants with the Junior Academy

Why are we best placed to deliver?

A number of parents, football coaches and representatives from the local community made contact with the Club to provide a community facility and resource for children and young people from the local community to participate in football, training, coaching and physical exercise activities. They indicated they required a local community based organisation to provide a training facility including changing room facilities, outdoor playing fields all within a safe and secure environment. They requested access to the provision of sports and physical exercise equipment within the training facility and an organisation to deliver this provision. We are ideally placed.

Expected impact

We have provided football training, coaching and physical exercise activities since 2017. Initially we had a 35 adult male participants however since the introduction of the Junior Academy and Ladies team we now have over 150 members. We now have football training, coaching and physical exercise activities on a Tuesday and Thursday (6:00pm-7:00pm) and this is now starting to having a positive impact on the fitness, health and well-being of all the children, young people and adults, especially since the COVID pandemic. However, we are seeking additional funding to ensure we are sustainable for the next 6 months, especially as we will need to hire the training facility so the disadvantaged school aged children and young people can continue to train throughout the year. We will undertake a survey of the health and well-being of all participants to determine the effectiveness of the football training, coaching and physical exercise activities and provide feedback to fund holders

Track record

We have had positive feedback from our community since we formally opened our Junior Academy in Horden on 5 July 2022. More and more parents are enquiring about what we do? who is involved? when it takes place? and if their child can come along to training etc. We know from experience, our participants are engaged in worthwhile, productive activity. In doing so they are developing skills not only in football, but also skills that are transferrable such as team working, communicating effectively and contributing to the fabric of the local community. We know this through feedback from participants and the wider community via social media and word of mouth; and through our contact with various community. The club is an asset to its community. We supported our local community by delivering a FREE 3 day Event during the 2023 Summer School Holidays - for disadvantaged school aged children "fun, activities and competitions including football" This included a FREE packed lunch for over 150
