Gleaning Cornwall

The Pitch

Problem statement
Food banks and community kitchens and larders are currently struggling for food and thousands of tonnes of food is not harvested or sold for human consumption, across Cornwall
Solution
By gleaning vegetables and fruit that is either surplus, unsellable or just not the right size or shape and delivering them to the food charities across Cornwall, we are helping reduce waste and feed those in need.
Why are we best placed to deliver?
Since September, we have gleaned over 100 tonnes of food. We have 7 paid coordinators and nearly 300 volunteers and a distribution system in place to reach over 40 food charities.

Expected impact
Food banks often lack fresh produce but our gleaned produce couldn't be fresher and many have and continue to learn how to cook local, seasonal produce as a result. The volunteers and coordinators alike very much enjoy coming together, reducing waste and getting a 'green' work out in the fresh air!
Track record
Since September we have saved over 100 tonnes of veg and fruit, delivered regularly to over 40 food charities across Cornwall and Plymouth and have nearly 300 volunteers signed up to help.
