The Pitch

Problem statement

There are many locations on the Golders Green Estate that have been neglected for year. The Met statistics report for May 2022 highlights the area as a crime hot spot (13 miscellaneous thefts and 14 residential break ins). Antisocial behaviour seems to be a daily occurrence. The pavements on Pennine Drive and Purbeck Drive are often covered in litter. Neighbours do not feel safe using the Purbeck Drive entrance for Clitterhouse Playing Fields as the gate is often blocked by groups of young men and their cars.

Solution

"Planters for Hope" The project aims to create temporary gardens to address choronic ASB at Pennine Drive and Purbeck Drive, Golders Green Estate, NW2: - 4 flower planters will be place at the metal gate / fence at Purbeck Drive - 5 planters will fill the gaps in the green strip at Pennine Drive shop parade We will use pollinator friendly plants and peat free compost. Residents will reclaim the neglected space by building the planters and looking after the plants. The project will strengthen community cohesion; neighbours will get the chance to get to know each other better and encourage wildlife.

Why are we best placed to deliver?

"Planters for Hope" is a joint project between: - Anika Bakirtzidis, Vounteer Team Leader and Outreach Coordinator at Clitterhouse Farm (Our Yard at Clitterhouse Farm) -Pamela Adams, professional Gardener and Garden Designer, Leader of the Forest School at Clitterhouse Farm - Golders Green Residents Association All three are residents of the Golders Green Estate and care deeply about the neighbourhood.

Expected impact

We hope to reduce the chronic ASB in the local area by transforming these two neglected corners and by helping residents to reclaim their neighbourhood. Urban gardening has many different benefits for the overall society. It can improve quality of life, people feel happier in their local neighbourhood. Gardening and spending time outside can improve metal health. Residents will get the chance to get to know each other better, which will strengthen a sense of community. London is in many parts a concrete jungle, the more green spaces we create, the more pollinators we attract the better for the environment.

Track record

Our Yard at Clitterhouse Farm relies on regular Funding Applications to build a local community hub. We are in the process of transforming the old manor house. We have build a community garden, the farm cafe and three indoor workshop spaces. See www.ouryard.org
