To create an inclusive sports team and sessions for mixed ages, ability, sex, and ability/disability. Wheelchair Rugby League is recognised as an inclusive sport where able bodied and disablility participants can play rugby together regardless of age sex and ability. It has health benefits, reduces loneliness builds confidence and self esteem. We currently have a mother and daughter and a father and son who train together at our sessions, where one has a disability and the other doesn't. It is a sport that has the same rules as the running game of rugby league with adaptions for wheelchairs which level the playing field. We would also do taster sessions for other sports.
We need equipment- posts, post weights, post protectors, to be able to train with the goal of competing in a league and cup competitions from next season along with Continued Professional Development and training for coaches and volunteers in safeguarding, club welfare, first aid and Match Officials course. The goal is to overcome barriers to sport for people with disabilities and their carers/family, reduce social isolation for this population and provide fun sessions where there is an option to compete in fixtures or just join us for training and fun. It will provide people with a safe environment and access sport where they wouldn't be able to normally.
There is no Wheelchair rugby league club other than us in the Cardiff post code area, we have already got 10 sports wheelchairs and a qualified coach who has previously coached the Welsh national team, with a background in Sports Development (mainly working within disability sports. There is a need for other types of sports that people with disabilities can access and we are a large club who strive to be inclusive and support each other. We have had Autism awareness training.
