The Pitch

Problem statement

Our sessions will be tailored towards females, after consultation with women groups across East London we have learnt that there is lack of provisions offered to females of BME background to improve their health and fitness, offer opportunities and ideas to address inequality and promote inclusion. Nearly half of women (47%) do not complete half an hour of exercise at least three times per week. Through this funding opportunity and it with current cost of living crisis, this will allow us to offer FREE to access sessions to our group thereby tackling this need with improved access to take part in physical activity using creativity for our target audience.

Solution

Our project will celebrate the diversity of our participants and the benefits that it brings to London, with a 3-month programme of fortnightly three-hour per session of creativity and physical activity of walking focused on wellness using greenspaces across different regions of London. The sessions will be designed to improve confidence in walking on a more regular basis, boost mental wellbeing and give participants safe opportunities for social interaction bringing people together. By offering regular sessions of merging creative medium of sketching on the move and physical activity we will work with females, who are often inactive, make physical activity part of their weekly routine.

Why are we best placed to deliver?

We have previously offered all-female activity sessions for women in East London, which wasn't something offered to girls and women in our community previously and this is a tried and tested provision. Women from BME backgrounds are one of the most under-served groups in our community. We feel that there is a lack of services and activities designed to meet the needs of women. Our female participants told us that physical provision is important to them, however they also want to be ‘socially smart’. Our programme was designed to make women carry themselves with confidence and explore spaces where normally they would not.

Expected impact

This investment will support and ignite a programme which will plan to retain and grow for the foreseeable future, in supporting our target group who are not offered access to physical activity provision. To ensure we continue and are supporting our target group we aim to provide more opportunities for their representation, having their input in to the designs and construction of future projects, conducting surveys on how our projects impacted their confidence and do they feel self-aware about their wellbeing. We will offer a workplace opportunity to a young person to assist with monitoring and have worked out the cost based on research done on online sites for equipment, agreement of fee with staff, and additional costing based on experiences on hosting similar funded projects. All this is vital, as it would help us understand the bigger picture of change, we anticipate our project will contribute towards.
