In Barnet, youth employment trends reflect both positive opportunities and some challenges. For 16-18 year-olds, the proportion of those not in education, employment, or training (NEET) stood at around 16.4% by the end of 2023. For 18-year-olds, the situation is concerning, with nearly a third not in education or training. Additionally, Barnet is focusing on targeted interventions to support economically inactive young people, particularly those in areas with higher deprivation, such as West Hendon. We want to be there for young people, in our programmes 60% of our workforce have come through taking part in out programmes previously. We will support young people to their chosen careers.
We will offer unemployed young people 16+ (the majority of whom will be from the BAME community) the opportunity to complete youth work and sport qualifications which will enable them to work in the industry. Once they have gained the qualification, we will work with them to improve their CVs and their interview skills, while supporting them to volunteer with us. They will then create a sports project for children to take part in by researching what they want. They will be given a mentor to help them succeed. Outputs: 12 young people will be offered a range of qualifications for them to take part in. The young people will in turn, support or coach 60 young people across the project.
Our organisation is highly trusted within the communities we serve, particularly in areas of high deprivation across London. Our Upshot data across our programmes shows that 89% of attendees are from ethnicities other than ‘white British/Irish,’ and the majority come from the most deprived areas. This highlights both our ability to reach those most in need and the importance of keeping our provision affordable. We collaborate extensively with local authorities, schools, and community organisations to ensure the success of our programmes. These partnerships allow us to leverage local resources and ensure that our services meet the specific needs of the communities.

Our track record is evident in the fact that 60% of our staff started as programme attendees before moving into volunteering or paid roles. This demonstrates our success in nurturing young talent and creating development pathways. Additionally, our high retention rates and consistently positive feedback reflect the value our programmes bring to young people. For instance, in 2024, we had daily attendance of 600-700 children, and we receive frequent positive reviews from parents and participants.
