The Pitch

Problem statement

Food poverty is a huge issue currently. Many of the young people we work with are in receipt of, and rely on, free school meals to provide them with enough food each day. Over the Christmas holidays, young people and their families do not receive this additional support. We find that they often have to go without, or choose between food and other vital necessities such as heating during the freezing winter months. This has a massive impact on wellbeing, and physical and emotional health.

Solution

Our solution is to provide the young people who attend our Youth Club on Wheels SNG-partnered sessions in Speedwell and Weavers Mill Close with Christmas hampers. We will fill these hampers with breakfast supplies that will last the entire 2-week Christmas holiday. The provision of hampers means that young people and their families will not have to go hungry during the holidays. The impact of this is huge, removing the immense stress that many often have to go through each year. Young people will be able to enjoy the festive period, knowing that they have food to look forward to each morning. Not only is this hugely positive for physical health, but also mental and emotional wellbeing.

Why are we best placed to deliver?

Our organisation is best placed to deliver this project because we regularly engage with these young people affected by food poverty. Our Youth Club on Wheels visits Speedwell and Weavers Mill Close weekly, and we have developed great relationships with the young people who attend. This includes having discussions with them about food, cooking, and the challenges that they face. We have come to truly understand what our young people want and need, and as such we know that they will massively benefit from these Christmas hampers. The project is therefore set up for success as we are directly responding to a critical need our young people have.

Expected impact

We expect our project to have a massive impact on the young people who attend our Youth Club on Wheels sessions, and by extension their families. These young people are aged between 8-15, and many are currently in receipt of free school meals particularly as a result of the cost of living crisis. The provision of breakfast hampers means that young people will have: - Improved nutrition: we can ensure that young people receive the essential nutrients to support their health and wellbeing - Increased food security: this means that young people and their families won’t have to worry about where their next meal comes from - Enhanced well-being: young people feel like their needs matter, which helps to improve mental health and emotional resilience Measurable targets include: - The number of hampers distributed: we are aiming to distribute all 25 - Impact on overall wellbeing and mental health: we expect to see a great self-reported improvement at the completion of our project
