The Pitch

Problem statement

There is a lack of affordable music lessons for primary aged children in this local community. We have a passion to enrich the lives of primary aged children through music lessons at our local community centre. We have now taught Piano, Violin and Guitar on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays since November 2021. We have 15 pupils and a waiting list of 20 pupils for music lessons. This year we are teaching Violin, Piano and Singing lessons. All our Pupils were beginners but we are already working towards Exam entrances with some of them. All pupils have the opportunity to take Music exams.

Solution

Funding would be spent to make the lessons more affordable for the parents, and therefore provide access to all members of the community as we could also offer free lessons to those on universal credit benefits. Funding would be spent to pay for the hire of the music room. Which currently music teachers pay for. So music teachers get paid music union rates. Funding would be used to pay for the administration and coordination of the music school which I have currently been doing voluntarily. Funding would also pay to promote and engage all members of the community. To purchase instruments that students cannot afford.

Why are we best placed to deliver?

Son of an appointed Royal Society Musician, I am an experienced Classroom Music Teacher of 17 years who gained an AGSM at The Guildhall School of Music & Drama and worked as a professional playing Musician until a shoulder injury at 28 years old. We live by the community centre and have regular contact with the children in this local community because we have a son in the local school. We have run the Music School successfully for nearly two years now, building it from only 3 pupils to 15 currently with a waiting list. We have a passion for enriching the lives of people through the Arts.

Expected impact

Local primary children will have had regular music lessons at a third less so parents would pay £2 per lesson rather than the current £18, Four children from homes on universal credit could have free lessons for the summer term. Therefore improving their mental health, self esteem and love of learning a new skill particularly post lockdown/ during this pandemic. Musicians having regular employment and contributing to enriching the lives of others. The community centre benefits from bringing people together and hiring the music room. Parents pay a third less fir the lesson from £18 to £2 per lesson for the remaing part of the summer term. Or we could spread it evenly starting after half term depending on when we got the funding. I could hire another teacher to teach on the Tuesday. Currently we have guitar and violin on Monday 4.00pm -6.30pm. Thursday Piano 4.00pm-6.30pm and piano on Friday 4.00pm -6.30pm. 15 students. If we could do a Tuesday Music lesson we could have 5 more students
