The Pitch

Problem statement

The Homeless Outreach Liaison Team (HOLT) addresses the urgent medical and mental health needs of homeless individuals in Reading, especially during harsh winter months. Homelessness has risen, with a 25% increase in approaches from 1,539 to 1,930 from 2021/22 to 2022/23, and is expected to keep rising into 2024/25 due to ongoing pressures like the cost of living crisis, housing shortages, and limited mental health and social services. Homeless individuals face severe risks from cold weather, lack of basic resources, and are 50% more likely to experience mental health issues than the general population.

Solution

The Homeless Outreach Liaison Team (HOLT) will provide essential winter supplies to Reading's homeless population to reduce cold-related health risks and improve well-being. The project will distribute flasks, blankets, and thermal clothing such as socks, gloves, and hats. These items will help rough sleepers stay warm and safe during the winter. The outreach team will also provide ongoing medical and mental health support, reducing the risk of hypothermia, respiratory infections, and frostbite while improving dignity and connecting individuals with local health services

Expected impact

The Winter Essentials Packs project aims to significantly improve the lives of vulnerable individuals in Reading, particularly those experiencing homelessness. By providing essential supplies, we expect to achieve the following impacts: Health Improvement: We anticipate a reduction in cold-related health issues, such as hypothermia and respiratory illnesses. Our goal is to prevent at least 30% of recipients from experiencing health crises due to exposure to harsh winter conditions. Increased Well-being: The provision of warm clothing and supplies is expected to enhance the mental well-being of at least 100 individuals, helping to reduce feelings of isolation and anxiety. Empowerment and Support: By distributing the packs, we hope to empower recipients with the resources they need to cope with winter challenges, facilitating access to further health services. Overall, the project will directly address immediate needs while fostering resilience among Reading’s most vulnerable population

Track record

This is our first project of its kind, but we recognise the urgent need for support this winter due to the ongoing challenges faced by vulnerable populations. While we haven't run a winter essentials project before, our Homeless Outreach Liaison Team (HOLT) has extensive experience in providing medical and mental health support to homeless individuals in Reading.
