The Pitch

Problem statement

North Stonehouse is characterised by high levels of deprivation, ranked the second most deprived neighbourhood in the city on the IMD and one of the most deprived nationally. Within this housing is dominated by landlord owned properties, many of which are split into bedsits or HMO's. There are very few spaces remaining where people have an opportunity to meet sand connect, this exasperates the deeper social and health issues that underlie the area linked to social isolation, mental-health issues, drug and alcohol dependency. We want to create opportunities for local people to meet, connect with others and with us as a community organisation building a stronger, connected community.

Solution

Building on the success of a Summer Fun Day which brought together approx. 400 people, we are planning a Christmas in Stonehouse event on 7th December. This will involve the local churches and other community organisations coming together to create a Christmas-themed street event in the heart of North Stonehouse. We want this to be fun and engaging for families; funding will be used to provide activities for children and their parents (£500), food (£200), publicity (£100) and project management costs (£200).

Why are we best placed to deliver?

Cliik Community is a charitable Community Benefit Society registered with the FCA (registration number 8451) in 2020 with the mission to improve the quality of life for people living in North Stonehouse, Plymouth. We operate The Talk Shop; a space highly valued by regular users and increasingly are reaching out to the community by organising events beyond The Talk Shop (e.g. the Patna Park Fun Day attended by approx. 400). For this event we are working collaboratively with the both the local churches for the first time so that we can have a 'wet weather' plan (as well as building on the social capital of their connections into the community) along with the Stonehouse Community Builders.

Track record

Patna Park Fun Day engaged approx. 400 people from across the community, including children, parents, refugees, broad ethnic diversity. 8 community organisations took part; 7 new people volunteered on the day to support the event. Feedback from participants included comments like 'It was wonderful to see something like this happening for the community'; 'my children have had such a wonderful day'; 'I met my neighbour today and found out their name'.
