The proportion of the local population who are elderly is increasing - that group is significantly impacted by social isolation, deprivation and long term conditions. For example, nearly 30% of older people locally are affected by income deprivation and depression is the most prevalent long term condition in South Camden area. Many older people are financially excluded from going to local activities or cultural venues and they are cut off from wider family networks - as people move away or digital exclusion means people find it harder to stay in touch. There is real risks to older people becoming more and more isolated amplifying the impact of mental health issues and illness.
Our work with older people is preventative - focused on helping them maintain their independence, stay in their homes and improve their well-being. This project is part of that approach. We’ll use art as a therapeutic approach and process to engage older people. Through reminiscence, expression of their feelings, airing concerns and recognising joy in their life older people will improve how they feel about themselves. Crucially, they'll do that in a safe, welcoming space, with others. That helps to engage and involve older adults longer term and build ongoing networks of friendship and support.
HCA have a long history of working with vulnerable older people locally. Currently, 79% of our interactions with older people are with those in the top 30% most affected by deprivation affecting local people nationally. We have strong relationships with social prescribers, GP practices and health professional networks. And we're well versed in delivering activities that provide care for vulnerable people and use artistic processes as a therapeutic tool.

Older people will report a greater sense of well being - with an opportunity to explore and express issues relevant to them as well as reflect on things to celebrate they will feel an improved sense of self worth and better able to articulate, and respond to challenges in their lives. Older people will also report a greater sense of connection in their community - the activity will introduce them to a wider network of peers in the community as well as give them opportunity to develop new, meaningful relationships with people in the area.
