Dementia is the biggest health and social care challenge of this century. There is no cure and with everyone living longer it is becoming more of a social challenge, globally, People genuinely still think dementia just affects older people and yet over 40,000 people of the 850,000 diagnosed in the UK are living with Young Onset Dementia and under 65. Many at working age and with young families. One in two of us will be affected by this complex brain disease in our life time, therefore a deeper understanding and awareness of the disease will enable our community to respond to those effected with compassion and empathy. With knowledge comes power.
The goal of our project which is in the early stages is to create updated sessions. They will be branded to the Exeter Dementia Action Alliance and include a wealth of local resources that will help educate our community. Your brand at South West Water will feature. The sessions will include the creation of couple of activities, be immersive, generate dialogue, enable the groups to share their personal experiences all as part of a dynamic 75 minute offering across the city. Each session and the testimonials provided will be shared on our social media platforms to evidence our reach across Exeter.
The alliance has just celebrated 10 years of making a difference for dementia in the city through raising awareness and inspiring action. We have delivered 250 sessions reaching over 3500 people to date. However, we wish to update our sessions due to our growing expertise and personal experience. The image is the new banner we have created which shares the acronym CARE for compassion, awareness, respect and equality. This banner is illustrated by the late cartoonist Tony Husband and was his last piece of work he created for EDAA. Our mission is to work with committed and caring partners to deliver positive and lasting change in our city for people affected by Dementia.

Given the rising statistics and the fact there is no cure, this will be invaluable knowledge. This will help people both professionally and personally.
