There are health benefits from regular exercise as well as spending time outside. The participants learn to take instructions and to push themselves out of their comfort zone. They work both as an individual and as part of a team. The sessions help them improve their social skills and they provide an avenue for relaxation. Students also practise their independence and communication skills whilst out in the tennis sessions and staff support new interactions. Success on the tennis court helps boost self esteem and confidence. The tennis sessions allow the staff of care organisations to see their charges in a different environment, and sometimes they are surprised to see a participant's ability, which they never knew existed. By offering these regular sessions we hope to spark an interest, which may develop into a habit. Indeed, one of our participants with Down's Syndrome is now playing in tournaments at Loughborough.
Danny Sapsford, Manager of the national tennis charity "Bright Ideas for Tennis" says of the inclusive provision at Hinckley: " I’m writing on behalf of John McGowan and Hinckley Town LTC, and in support of their application for funding to continue the great work delivering inclusive tennis sessions for the community. As in most situations, a programme is only as good as the coaches and volunteers that devote their time and energy to run it. Within my charity remit, I have worked with over 500 tennis venues , and I can honestly say that John and his team of coaches / volunteers are second to none. Their goals are to get more people playing tennis, to be totally inclusive and keeping it as affordable as possible. They have demonstrated to me their success in achieving these goals. Their track record over recent years since I have known them has been fantastic regarding implementation of policies, and delivery of projects. I am extremely happy to be supporting this application".
