The Pitch

Problem statement

The club is seeking partial funding to help improve and develop both the Gent’s toilet and kitchen facilities. The desired improvements are intended to address the current state of disrepair, modernise the spaces, and increase the opportunity for more people/new groups to use the club. The existing gent's toilet facilities are dated and include stainless steel sinks and urinals, with constant running water at the urinals. There are small signs of damp in a couple of areas and old Formica surfaces which are marked and difficult to clean thoroughly. The kitchen also suffers from similarly dated facilities.

Solution

The old facilities will be stripped out and replaced with more modern equipment including new urinals, toilets, wall / floor tiles, kitchen units, worktops. Any outdated plumbing or electrical fittings would be upgraded at the same time. The refurbishment will help ensure we continue to provide a facility which is an asset to the wider community and can meet the needs of other community groups, a number of whom already use the club on a regular basis throughout the year.We are trying to diversify our services beyond the game of bowls itself, and we believe through an award there is an opportunity to improve the services we can provide at the club.

Why are we best placed to deliver?

Over recent years we have worked closely with a local organisation who provide housing support and care at home to people with learning disabilities, in their own homes and in shared accommodation. They use the club for both social and staff training purposes. The club is also used by a local chess club, and also by different property factors who use the venue to host AGMs and meetings for local resident groups. Our most recent, and developing partnership, is with The Language Institute Edinburgh. They are a British Council Accredited and a SQA validated school that provides language immersion and cultural programmes for students from Europe and beyond.

The club is used not just by members, but also by external guests who have hired the venue, different community organisations, local companies and also foreign exchange students. As a rough estimate, I think that approximately 3,000 different people might visit the club during the year.

Expected impact

The club has been used as a meeting venue by factors for local housing schemes, as a public consultation venue for local energy network changes that were being made, for highland dancing lessons, and is also used every Tuesday by a local chess club. Some of our external users also have varying needs, including wheelchair users, autism, and challenging behaviours, for whom, familiarity of surroundings is key. Our most recent, and developing partnership, is with The Language Institute Edinburgh that provides language immersion and cultural programmes for students from Europe and beyond. This group has already used the club for dance lessons, and we see great potential in extending this arrangement to include staff meetings, quiz nights, and perhaps most significantly in terms of our application, to use the club as a facility to provide lunch / meals to groups of students.
