The Pitch

Problem statement

We deliver the Butterfly Project in Enfield’s most deprived areas, where girls and young people are at risk of serious youth violence. Our projects supports those from migrant communities who face challenges in relation to their identity and self esteem. The majority of our beneficiaries do not have parents or carers who are able to advocate for them and often find themselves as unidentified young carers, feeling isolated and unsupported. The Butterfly Project provides diversionary activities designed to reduce the risk of child criminal exploitation and prevent suicidal behaviour. We build mental wellbeing and confidence by helping beneficiaries to advocate for themselves and stay safe.

Solution

Butterfly After School Project ENFIELD will improve mental health and wellbeing. Working with up to 20 of the most vulnerable girls and young people for 24 weeks, we will cover: 1. Identity - promoting positive body image and safe social media engagement. 2. Healthy Relationships - reducing peer and relational abuse. 3. Boundaries and Resilience - developing assertive communication skills, exploring racism, discrimination and the ability to learn from mistakes. 4. Aspirations and Goals - 95% of our beneficiaries feel more confident about their future. £1792 - Salary of Project Leader working 4 hours per week at £16 per hour. £208 - Safeguarding/ Child Protection Training | DBS | Travel.

Why are we best placed to deliver?

The Gifted have been delivering its programmes across 21 partner schools in Enfield since 2019. We have successfully helped to reduce school exclusions and youth violence by 16.7% in Enfield. We are the only charity in Enfield offering gender specific projects addressing radicalisation, exploitation and suicide prevention. We have an established partnership with our host ENACT Centre. Our programmes work; we have seen 80% reduction in self-harm, 95% more confident about their future, 80% felt stronger and resilient, 90% boost in aspirations, 70% less likely to engage in risky behaviour, 80% felt a stronger sense of self-respect and reduced feelings of anxiety.

Expected impact

In 2023, the Commission on Young Lives and Manchester Metropolitan University reported, around a quarter of children at risk of serious violence and criminal exploitation are girls but they do not receive the same level of attention as young boys at risk. By 2025, we expect at least 80% of our beneficiaries to report that they have the tools to avoid risky situations, stay safe and have healthier and fulfilling lives. In our recent consultation with 43 vulnerable girls and young people, 46% reported that they struggle with setting boundaries (making them potentially vulnerable to CCE, youth violence and radicalisation). We have been able to set the following benchmarks, using Gifted Star (wellbeing scores): future 95%, learning 85%, relationships 80%, coping 80%, health 65%, support 80%, harm 75%, identity 85%, communication 90% and accountability 85%. We expect all participants to progress from a state of ‘apathy and not bothered’ to 'making change and doing great’.

Track record

The Gifted is a female and minority led organisation, with lived experience; youth violence, domestic abuse, anti-muslim hate, prejudice, parenting and deprivation. We have a successful 10 year track record, targeting young people affected by youth violence, bullying, child criminal exploitation, racism, hate crime and sexual assault in Enfield. NSPCC, studies show that a child is more at risk of witnessing youth violence, being victims of child criminal exploitation if they have: - been excluded from school (40 girls were previously suspended in 2022/23) - special education needs (50% beneficiaries SEND) - experienced problems at home like neglect, domestic abuse or sexual abuse (46 girls over past 2 years) - problems with their mental health (59% in 2022/23) - live in existing gang territory (38%). "We are very pleased with The Butterfly Project. It is making a tremendous difference in terms of confidence, school attendance and classroom behaviour.” Edmonton County Sch. 2023
