The Pitch

Problem statement

For people living alone, families with children or for people who are not all that confident in the kitchen, micro vegetables are the perfect answer. You don't need a garden and you don't even need a kitchen (but it helps). All you need a window sill and the right ingredients to grow tiny vegetables packed with vitamins, minerals, protein and fibre.

Solution

We will run a workshop every week during January and February, both in person and online, teaching people to grow a variety of micro vegetables such as peas, broccoli, coriander and sunflowers. We will supply all the ingredients necessary like cardboard trays, soil and seeds as well as providing recipes to inspire beginners or confidents cooks. For those people who can make the classes in person, we will host Zoom workshops and send the seed packs in the post. Finally, when all the seeds are harvested, the waste material can be brought back to the garden to be composted.

Why are we best placed to deliver?

We have been delivering gardening sessions to local residents for nearly 40 years. Very few people have their own private gardens in Kings Cross, and we provide communal food growing space and mini-allotments. We teach organic growing methods and we have composting facilities for garden waste. Micro vegetables can be enjoyed by many more people and they are ideal nutrition during the Winter.

Expected impact

Micro greens are eaten fresh and raw, and the fresher the leaves are, the more vitamins and minerals they contain. They are also very easy to grow and participants who are complete food growing novices will successfully grow vegetables for their own consumption quickly and easily. We would also hope to inspire more people to take part in our gardening sessions during the week.
