Expected impact
Apollo Sports Club has been in it's current location since 1978 and in this time has helped 100's of local people to exercise in a friendly, encoraging environment. Our volunteers run 5 sessions a week .. Monday, Wednesday & Friday are Adult Circuit training session, Tuesday are adult Disco aerobic and Thursday evening is the family session, were the parent and the child exercise together in a fun, lets get moving way. 4 years ago the Apollo Committee and it's members all came together and dug out an area of wasteland behind our sports hall. We fund raised enough money to fence it off, concrete the floor and cover the ground with astro turf and the if we are fortunate enough to recieve a grant from yourselves the money will be spent on education and more equipment to fully utilise this area. Our numbers have grown over the years and extra voluteers will help to keep the sessions running by support each other and put on extra sessions for other groups.
Track record
During my 30 years as a volunteer at Apollo Sports Club in Torquay we have recieved many awards, the most prestigious being the South Wests BBC Unsung hero of the year. Apollo was choosen by the BBC and they sent a film crew to make a promotion video clip, I have also received the Devon Sports Volunteer of the year and the Torbays Sports Personality of the year. I could spend hours explaining the history of Apollo and the money we have raised / granted for projects over the years, such as :- new roof, water supply, re-wiring of the electrical systems, new flooring, coaching courses for our volunteers and football kits for the over 200 youngsters that have played football for Apollo. We acheived the Chartered Standard Club award from the Football Association and McDonalds gave us an award which included taking 72 youngsters to play at Wembley Football Staduim. Working as a Detention Officer at Torquay Police Station, we have received sponsorship from Devon and Cornwall Constabulary.
