The Pitch

Problem statement

Individuals with learning disabilities often face barriers in building and maintaining social bonds. This can lead to feelings of isolation and loneliness that hinder overall well-being. Children with Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) are twice as likely as other children to be bullied (IoE 2014). Adults with learning disability tend to have smaller, more restricted social networks than other adults. The charity Sense suggest over half of disabled people reported feeling lonely, rising to over three quarters (77%) for those aged 18-34. Loneliness is associated with physical and mental health problems and poorer quality of life (Gilmore & Cuskelly, 2014).

Solution

Accuro provides welcoming, friendly, safe and stimulating environments for people with disability with the aim to reduce loneliness and social isolation for our members and their families and carers. Our projects empower local people with a disability to gain confidence, independence and self-esteem and increase health and well-being. Funding will be spent on project activities such as craft materials, refreshments, ingredients for cooking sessions or trips in the community such as bowling. Accuro provides much-needed short break respite, helping to keep families together. We enable people to Belong, Contribute and Thrive in their local community and develop and fulfil potential.
