The Pitch

Problem statement

We aim to support the residents of Mirehouse, Whitehaven and local areas with improved physical fitness and mental health support where good health is a hoped for expectation and not a privilege. “Tubby FC” aims to improve the health and wellbeing of its members and the community through physical activity and positive communal interaction. As a project we appreciate the support that has been given to us to date from various sources and to show our gratitude we have made efforts, as a group, to contribute back to our community.

Solution

Currently we are providing our members 2 one-hour training sessions per week on Astro or grass field pitches and use of the local St Benedict’s RUFC club house facilities. We follow these training sessions with various competitive football matches against groups of a similar ilk all over the north of the country recently visiting the North East and Scotland. These matches usually follow a pattern of home and away fixtures so that each group gets to experience the situation of being the home and away team. This can provide the experience for many who when growing up never actually got to experience such situations.

Why are we best placed to deliver?

“Tubby FC” was founded in June 2021 and has grown to its current level with over 30 individuals, from all walks of life, signed on from the local community. We have a lot of interest from individuals wanting to joins and are actively recruiting at this time.

Expected impact

“Tubby FC’s” home is based in the centre of the Mirehouse estate in Whitehaven, which was built in the 1950s for workers in the developing nuclear industry and for those living in poor housing slums in the town centre and dock areas of Whitehaven. Mirehouse currently ranks within the 10% most deprived of areas in England and with this in mind we try to keep our fees as low as possible whilst aiming to be self-sufficient in covering the fees for facilities/equipment/transport etc. However, support from others is requested to ensure our fees can remain minimal.

Track record

Tubby FC has now been running for over 2 years since initiation back in 2021. The numbers have grown and interest in the project is constant. We are actively recruiting at this time. We have achieved accreditation and affiliation with the Cumberland FA. As a project we appreciate the support that has been given to us to date from various sources and to show our gratitude we have made efforts, as a group, to contribute back to our community. We have already raised thousands of pounds for selected charities through our charity football matches and we have given back to the local community by taking part in local litter sweeps while working with other local organisations (Local youth project group/Local residents group) arranging and supporting a free fun day for the community which was a massive success.
