The Pitch

Problem statement

We are looking to buy a refurbished set of gang mowers to mow our two cricket outfields. The pitches are used by over 1000 men women and children each year for practising and playing cricket. Using our own resources and local help we have just constructed a second pitch as we need it to cope with our expanding number. At the end of last season our current gang mowers, recycled from a local football club, “gave up the ghost” We had to borrow equipment to complete the season. We have to mow each pitch once or usually twice a week from March to November and can not manage on borrowed equipment. We are committed to finishing the new pitch and had not budgeted for buying gang mowers.

Solution

Buy a refurbished set of gang mowers

Why are we best placed to deliver?

We have been organising and playing cricket for juniors and adults for 70 years since our reformation. We are Club Mark accredited and run the ECB All Stars and Dynamos programmes for boys and girls and 5 years ago began women’s cricket. We link with local schools to provide opportunities for youngsters of all ages and ethnicities. We believe that players of all abilities should have fun through cricket and have players from basic to county junior level. We run 3 senior teams every Saturday and have played in the Village Cup since it’s inception. Our team of volunteer groundsmen help us prepare the grounds but are stuck without the gang mowers.

Expected impact

The mowers will allow all of our members and opponents to continue to play cricket at The Parks. Without refurbished mowers the outfield will quickly become unplayable and we will forfeit our place in the leagues in which we play.

Track record

We try to help ourselves: we have used a local farmer to level and seed the new outfield and we have re-built and re-roofed two dilapidated garages to serve as a scorebox for the new ground. We have gained planning permission to change the land from agricultural use to sports use and we have worked with The Woodland Trust and the Warwickshire Wildlife Trust to install hedges and trees around the new pitch. We have also gained approval to re-route a footpath that previously crossed the pitch. We have recently secured a grant from the ECB to fund the installation of an artificial strip so that we can play this year - the 70th year since the club reformed after the war.
