The Pitch

Problem statement

Just over three out of four suicides (76%) are by men and suicide is the biggest cause of death for men under 35.13.2% of men are suffering from a mental health disorder and 8% of men in the 16-24 age group have reported self-harm. Men are also less likely to come forward for support when they are struggling. In a 19 month period there were 22 male suicides in Okehampton and the surrounding areas, and as a community we need to do everything we can to prevent anymore. Getting the support to males is much harder with them not likely to come forward, so we need to get to them.

Solution

We want to reach out to males in & around Okehampton, and inform them about the support that is available, both locally & nationally and ensure they have access to useful numbers they can call at a time when they are struggling or in crisis. The way we want to do this is to provide local companies with free resources that we will encourage they put up around their work place, back of toilet doors etc & hand to employees/customers & we will go out in the community giving out small cards to fit in a wallet which will contain mental health support & suicide prevention numbers. The funding will be spent on printing & staff costs for this to be delivered and we expect to reach up to 7,500 men

Why are we best placed to deliver?

Currently as a community hub we support 120 + people a week who are struggling with their mental health or well-being, homelessness, addiction, long term health conditions, LGBTQ+ support, food poverty, loneliness & much more. Our core aim for The Well-being Cafe is make Okehampton & District a suicide safer place. Our team here, alongside training (ASSIST, Mental Health First Aid, Connect 5 and more), have between us over 90 years of working with those with a mental health diagnosis in a supported living setting & lived experience of mental illness & have been effected by suicide. We are part of the local Well-being Alliance & work closely with other support in the community.

Expected impact

The project will raise awareness of male suicides & mental health problems and provide support for men struggling with their mental health & well-being in Okehampton and surrounding areas. It will allow local companies to have continued support from us at The Well-being Cafe. It is important to provide support early; prevention and promotion are the most efficient and cost affective means of promoting health & well-being; while reducing dependency on other public services which are under pressure. This project will give individuals access to support at a time where they may not know where else to go. We will continue to keep in contact with the companies we have visited, will ask them to complete questionnaires on the impact it may have had on their workplace/setting & will encourage those we speak to access continued support with us at The Well-being Cafe.
