Expected impact

The money would be spent on purchasing 11 new hedgehog specific cages. The cages that we were able to buy last year have proved to be far superior to the old ones we have and have produced much better outcomes for the hedgehogs. The provide a far more natural environment with one side darkened so that they can sleep by day which is how they would behave in the wild. Also as they are moulded polypropolene they are much easier to keep very clean and avoid infections. The volunteers also much prefer working with these cages as they can see they hedgehogs are happier . Once the hedgehogs are back to full health we will release back to the wild and the more hedgehogs we release the better their chance of survival in the longer term. Hedgehogs are now classed as endangered in the UK and we are at risk of losing the UKs most loved mammal if rescues like ours are not able to help these adorable creatures.

Track record

We have worked hard to get a very good relationship with the public and local communities . We go into schools and community groups and deliver educations talks on hedgehogs and all the small things they can do in their garden to help the hedgehog population. We have recently been on the One Show and been on BBC and IYV national news and regional news regarding Hedgehog numbers declining in the UK . We feel we were chosen due to our good reputation and our success in releasing 95% of the sick and injured hedgehogs that come to us , back to the wild. We are run entirely by volunteers and every penny we raise goes directly back to the hedgehogs. The public have engaged with us and helped on our journey as a charity to continue to grow.
