The Pitch

Problem statement

Yorkshire Children's Centre is a registered charity that supports up to 80 disadvantaged young people aged 13-16 across our alternative (Brain Jackson) school provisions in Huddersfield and Heckmondwike. All our students have social, emotional and mental health difficulties. Our focus on the Mental Health of young people, particularly considering the last 18 months during Covid means access to sport and physical activity for improved wellbeing and focus is very important.

Solution

The project will enable up to 40 students from each site to access gym facilities and sports facility with football, basketball and tennis. Taking part in these activities alongside academic sessions will improve the mood, concentration, help to reduce stress and depression, improve sleep habits, boost self-confidence and we believe it will help to develop leadership skills in our pupils. The funding would be spent on 3 months access to gym sessions (£342) and sports facility sessions (£237).

Why are we best placed to deliver?

Yorkshire Children's Centre was established in 1974 and aims to improve lives; and inspire change so that children and young people have the opportunity to reach their full potential. Our experienced team of 100 staff and 250 volunteers deliver a wide range of services and programmes across West Yorkshire that support children, young people and their families. Our two alternative school provisions for young people 13-16 have been in existence for over 20 years and are managed by dedicated and experienced teaching and support staff that understand the needs of the young people. These are pupils that are at risk of, or have been excluded from mainstream school.
