The Pitch

Problem statement

Our speed based Life Saving club has over 40 members and has a mixture of current competitive swimmers, ex-swimmers as well as newcomers to competitive swimming. We have recently had a massive influx of new members joining who want to follow the RLSS UK award scheme, which provides youngsters with basic lifesaving skills and a foundational knowledge for future NPLQ and Lifeguard candidates. For us to do this we need to expand our pool space to be able to run the 2 sessions alongside one another in a safe and structured way, however upfront pool costs are stopping us from being able to reserve the additional pool space.

Solution

To enable us to reserve the additional pool space, the pool is asking for a financial 6 month upfront commitment to be able to secure our booking going forwards. To ensure we can secure the additional pool space we would need to pay a total of £4320 upfront to enable us to have this as a continuous booking going forwards. Whilst we are managing the space we have at the minute, we need to ensure the safety of our participants is maintained and our ethos of delivering high quality lifesaving lessons to youngsters is upheld. By gaining the additional pool space we could cater for an extra 40 members within our Lifesaving skills section which, in time would promote the sustainability of the club

Why are we best placed to deliver?

Since 1980 we have provided high quality Life Saving lessons to youngsters and adults from across Leeds, Bradford and Wakefield. Historically we were a Lifesaving Sport only club as that is where the majority of our members wanted to focus and train towards, being crowned the highest placed UK Youth club at 2016 Lifesaving World Championships. Following the Covid-19 pandemic we saw an increase in children wanting to get back involved in Lifesaving without that competitive speed and racing element and so we now trying to create our Lifesaving For All, skills section.

Expected impact

By enabling us to fund the 6 month upfront costs, we are able to support an additional 40 members within our club. Although our membership fee's will ensure the sustainability of our Lifesaving For All Skills based section, we need to be able to commit to the pool's upfront financial commitments to ensure we have sufficient space to cater for the additional 40 members. We will the be able to support these youngsters to gain many recognised RLSS UK qualifications, learn basic first aid and lifesaving skills and develop great foundational knowledge for future NPLQ and Lifeguard candidates. The additional pool space will allow us to run both sessions safely adhering to the pool's maximum operating capacity. Our team of volunteers will then be able to deliver quality Lifesaving Sport and the Lifesaving Skills session alongside one another, making Leeds Phoenix one of the best Lifesaving For All clubs within the UK.
