The Pitch

Problem statement

‘Making Waves’ provides 1.5 hour weekly dance sessions to ages 13 - 18 years who wish to pursue dance at higher education who are unaware of future opportunities. They are from low income families and areas of deprivation. There is more than 7,000 young people in Plymouth living in low income families. (Plymouth Report 2019). School exclusion is more common amongst boys, children with learning disabilities and children with poor physical health, as well as those living in socio-economically deprived circumstances. This equates to 10% of more school absences affecting future career prospects, indicating a need for further training. (Devon Children and Young People’s Sustainability Plan)

Solution

Through the 1.5 hour weekly dance sessions, technique skills will be provided alongside talks around further and higher education. We will provide Arts Awards qualifications to participants, promoting educational opportunities and building aspiration at this difficult time as GCSE’s and A-levels are cancelled this year causing stress around future stability. These Arts Awards will be at no cost to the participants. Funding will be used towards the facilitation of Arts Awards as well as the hire of two highly trained practitioners to deliver weekly sessions. Funding will also contribute toward external practitioners to lead workshops and talks aiding cultural experiences.

Why are we best placed to deliver?

Exim are in a unique position as the first graduate company of the Dance Course at the University of Plymouth. Since forming in 2011, we have built a strong reputation for our skill in working with hard to reach young people and developing young leaders. As a company we are mostly made up of graduates so we have an embedded knowledge of the courses which we pass on to potential students. Exim has excellent relationships with schools and colleges in the South West, which we use for recruitment for our projects. We have the ability to grow, build and maintain these relationships, therefore building connections between the Theatre and Performance Department and the relevant school/ colleges.
