Yaran Club

Who we are

Description

We have a large community of Farsi speaking women (Iranian, Afghan, Tajik, Kurdish) in the London Borough of Barnet. Most of these women are refugees or asylum seekers who have been placed in hotels like Holiday Inn in Brent Cross by the Home Office. The women who join us are usually very sad and lonely people who can't speak English. In Yaran we give them opportunity to make friends and find people in similar situations as themselves to talk to. We help them build their confidence and to recognise their capabilities and strengths. We provide English classes, exercise and dancing, therapeutic art, mindfulness and wellbeing sessions for them every week. Our teachers are also chosen from people who have had mental health issues themselves who are now sharing their skills and talents with other members of the club. The number of our beneficiaries increase every week and our members believe that Yaran has changed their life and it has given them the motivation to live again.
